I have been photographing since I was a boy, and I never really stopped.
It started with a camera that was already in the house. What followed was years of walking the same streets at different hours, learning how the light moves along them and, more slowly, learning to wait. Nine tenths of street photography is waiting.
For a long time it was just something I did for myself. That changed when I started photographing my friends.
When I took pictures of my friends, they told me they felt happy.
It had not occurred to me that my photographs could do that for anyone but me. Everything since has been an attempt to do it for more people, which is also why I started spending money on proper equipment: so that what comes back to you looks like what I actually saw.
I am a PhD student at an international university in Kyoto. Most of my photographs are made around Arashiyama and Gion, and those are the two places I know hour by hour. I also work with Memo Photo, a group of photographers.
